No, spend money somwhere else!. Owner a jacka$$. Food not very good. Overpriced. Check out other Italian in the city...Asti's or Francescas.
Ecclectic Italian- thumbs up!. I have lived in Syracuse for 26 years and overall, I would rate Gentiles a top 5. It gives a twist on typical Italian dishes (not just boring fried, breaded everything like at Dominics or Angottis) It's also a much nicer atmosphere with reasonable prices given the upper class ambiance. You can also have the chef CREATE a meal based on your likes and dislikes. Service was good, it's never overbooked or crowded. Overall, an amazing experience.
"Eclectic" or Just Pretending to be Italian.
I am new to Syracuse, so I have been relying on others for restaurant recommendations, so far to my great dismay. Both the quality of the food and what passes for service at Gentiles left me dumbfounded when trying to figure out why anyone would go there. Our waiter, who disappeared for long periods of time and had to be sought out to place our orders, had no idea of the menu and even less when it came to service etiquette.
The appetizer, Fried Calamari, was clearly prepared from frozen squid, well over the size and age appropriate for this dish. Imagine chewing a very large rubber band and you will experience the taste and texture of this dish.
For the main course, our orders included Penne, both with Vodka Sauce and Bolognese; Pecan Crusted Lobster Tail; NY Strip; and, Filet . The Penne was extremely overcooked and clearly from dried rather than fresh pasta, while the sauces bore no resemblance to their namesakes... the vodka sauce was insipid and slightly sour while the chef might want to look up Bolognese sauce to realize you don't just dump some hamburger into Ragu sauce. The Lobster Tail, again clearly a long frozen specimen, was inedible with more tasteless breading than the small hint of pecans. The NY Strip was the best dish served, yet too smothered in sauce. The Filet was good, but for the price should have been larger than a shish ka bob serving.
I have never eaten in an Italian restaurant that didn't offer fresh Parmesan and required chasing down the waiter for fresh pepper. Italian, is by far, my favorite and I have eaten in many good and great Italian restaurants. Gentile's should not be allowed to call themselves Italian, as they clearly have no familiarity with the cuisine. The cost of the meal was astronomical, even if the food had been marginally edible. Simply an awful experience from start to finish.
Consistently tasty food. Comfortable atmosphere, attentive wait staff and consistently tasty food, Gentiles provides all in one !
Incredible!!!!!. This is the most underrated restaurant in Syracuse. Adventurous yet comforting, without a bad choice on the menu. The food is bar none the best. The staff is fantastic, the ambiance is great, and the wine list is perfect.
